Puppies From Breeders

A well-bred puppy from a reputable breeder runs $3,000 to $5,000. Lines from reputable breeders with 24 month waitlists push $10,000.

What you're paying for: health-tested parents (OFA hips/elbows, DNA panels), proven bloodlines, and a breeder who screens buyers. Not just a dog. A genetically selected foundation.

🔑 How To Spot Red Flags At A Breeder's Facility

Green Dogs

If I had to do it all over again, this is the age I would've gotten Aki.

A "green dog" is a young dog (10 months to 2 years) that's been evaluated for drives, nerve, and temperament. Not fully trained yet. Think of it as a dog with confirmed potential.

Green dogs run $8,000 to $15,000 depending on location, bloodline, and foundational work.

Why go green? You skip the puppy gamble. With a green dog, you can see the drives, the nerve, the bite. The dog is showing you who it is.

Finished Dogs

A “finished dog” is a dog that has completed trained for its specific job.

This is where the price range gets wild.

So what separates a $20K dog from a $250K dog?

Some vendors split training into Level 1, Level 2, Level 3 and price accordingly. A dog is either trained to do the job or it's not. That's it.

Rescue & Adoption

You can find Malinois through rescue for $50 to $500. Breed-specific rescues like ABMR and MAD regularly have dogs available. Many are owner surrenders from people who underestimated the breed.

The 341st Training Squadron at Lackland AFB also runs a Military Working Dog Adoption Program. Retired and "washout" MWDs are available. Priority: law enforcement, then former handlers, then public. The adoption itself is free.
