A good trainer doesn't matter if you pick the wrong program.

Here's every training program and what it'll cost you. πŸ‘‡οΈ

Weekly Bite

Two weeks ago, I wrote πŸ”‘ How To Select The Right Trainer.

πŸ‘‰οΈ TL;DR: Select your dog's job and specialty first. Then evaluate trainers by their sport and working titles, not years of experience.

The 5 Types of Training Programs

1. Private Classes

Cost: $300-$800 per package (4 sessions).

This is how I train Aki with Rob for protection work. You learn alongside your dog, which is the whole point.

2. Group Classes

Cost: $120-$300 per package (4 sessions).

This is how I got started with Lexi. You train alongside other handlers, which doubles as socialization and distraction-proofing practice. Great way to dip your feet in.

3. Training Clubs

Cost: $500-$2,000 per year.

Sport-specific and usually an extension of private lessons. Good for practicing on different people (i.e., different decoys in protection sports).

4. Daytime Board & Train

Cost: $250-$500 per week.

Doggy daycare meets training. Your dog comes home mentally and physically tired, with some training built in.

5. Overnight Board & Train

Cost: $2,000-$250,000+ per program (4+ weeks).

Some breeders and K9 agencies raise, train, and deliver your dog ready to go.

These programs typically fall into 3 categories:

The 3 Types of Overnight Board & Train Programs

1. Foundational

Cost: $2,800-$8,500 per program.

Prepares puppies for any end goal. Includes: socialization, habituation, obedience, and house training.

2. Specialized

Cost: $10,000-$250,000+ per program.

Trains dogs with existing foundations for one specific end goal, e.g. protection, detection.

3. Comprehensive

Cost: $10,000-$250,000+ per program.

The full package, from puppy to fully trained. Foundational work AND specialized training for a specific end goal, e.g. protection, guide dog.

TL;DR: 5 training programs ranging from $120 to $250,000+. The right one depends on your end goal, timeline, and budget.

Next week, I'll break down what every type of Belgian Malinois costs, from untrained puppies to fully trained protection dogs, so you know exactly what you're paying for at each level.
