MaligatorMom said it best:
I wasn’t perfect raising Aki, but if I were to do it again - here are 10 mistakes I'd avoid making.
Cheat sheet at the bottom. 👇️
1️⃣ Don't Get A Trainer
The mistake: Waiting for professional advice until it's too late.
The cost: Mistakes you don't know you're making get rehearsed into habits. I've spent twice as much fixing them as preventing them would've cost.
The fix: Learn training theory before they come home, and line up the trainer early.
2️⃣ Don't Socialize Them
The mistake: Blindly following your vet's advice to isolate them until vaccines are done.
The cost: A dog that's scared of ordinary things. I'm still paying for it with Aki, one desensitization session at a time.
The fix: The window closes around 16 weeks. Controlled exposure at their pace beats waiting for the all-clear.
3️⃣ Don't Crate Train Them
The mistake: Assuming they'll settle on their own.
The cost: A needy dog you can't switch off, because settling is a skill they never learned.
The fix: If I could rewind with Aki, I'd have been more consistent with crate training from day one.
4️⃣ Take Them To Dog Parks
The mistake: Trusting that random dogs won’t punch holes in your fur baby.
The cost: One bad accident can flip a stable adolescent into a reactive project, and undoing reactivity sucks.
The fix: Controlled reps around proven dogs (i.e. your trainer’s dog or someone in your community/club) until other dogs stop mattering.
5️⃣ Don't Teach A Reliable Recall
The mistake: Trusting a recall in an environment with distractions worth more than what you can offer.
The cost: They don't come back the one time it matters. A loose dog, a pack of coyotes.
The fix: Train it against the real world. Fluency first, then distractions that outbid you, then distance.
6️⃣ Skip Mental Exercise
The mistake: Trying to tire them out through physical exercise only.
The cost: An unfulfilled dog with no outlet for their brain, and they'll make that your problem.
The fix: Train scent work instead of another round of mindless fetch. 15 minutes of nose work drains them like an hour of running, and it gives them a job.
7️⃣ Silence Their Voice
The mistake: Using positive punishment to extinguish the growl.
The cost: Dogs escalate on a ladder: staring, stiffening, growling, then the snap. Delete a rung and they skip to the next one. Your first warning becomes the bite.
The fix: Treat the growl as data. Make distance, note the trigger, and condition them before their boundaries are crossed.
8️⃣ Ignore Allergy Symptoms
The mistake: Treating chronic itch, ear infections, and loose stool as quirks.
The cost: An itchy dog, a guessing game that eats months, and vet bills that buy no answers.
The fix: They're data. Start the real diagnostic process early.
9️⃣ Don't Prep Them For Vet Visits
The mistake: Introducing the muzzle for the first time at the vet's office.
The cost: A scared dog on their worst day, and a muzzle that now means bad things. I started muzzle training Aki and never finished. Big mistake.
The fix: Train the muzzle at home while nothing hurts, and teach them to lock onto a toy until being touched barely registers. I once talked emergency staff into letting me restrain Aki for bloodwork instead of sedating him. You want that option.
🔟 Ignore Heat Stroke Symptoms
The mistake: Throwing the ball again when the panting says stop.
The cost: This is the one mistake on the list you might not get to fix. Heat stress is the 3rd leading cause of death in military working dogs.
The fix: Learn the 3 stages, from heavy panting to shovel tongue, and react at stage 1.
Cheat Sheet 🎁

Bottom Line: All ten mistakes are one idea: prevention beats repair, and your dog tells you things before they go wrong.
