How To Socialize Your Belgian Malinois
The ultimate guide to building confidence.
Why do so many Belgian Malinois end up reactive or fearful?
Genetics and poor socialization.
If I could do it all over again, here's what I would do differently.
Weekly Bite
A few posts in r/belgianmalinois caught my attention over the last couple of weeks.
No matter the endeavor, I always like to start with the end goal.
The end goal of socialization is simple.
Help your dog become adaptable to changes in social situations and environments.
A well-socialized Malinois should be able to ignore strangers and dogs — and function confidently in different environments.
To achieve this, it's best to start with a dog that is genetically predisposed to being adaptable and confident.
If you're interested in learning how to buy a Belgian Malinois with those genetic traits, stay tuned... I’m working on something…
If they don’t have those genetic traits, it takes much more effort to maximize their potential, within their genetic limits.
Genetics aside, the box is one of my favorite ways for building confidence and helping Aki become more adaptable.👇️
If you’ve never heard of the box or aren’t sure where to start, check out Pat Stuart’s free video lesson on the box.
He covers it from start to finish.
It’s available under “The Free Stuff!” section on his training portal.
But remember…
Even with all the effort you put in, socialization isn't something that you can just schedule.
It's an ongoing process encompassing all of their experiences, both intended and unintended.
Speaking of experiences, here are the do’s and don’ts of socialization — based on mistakes I’ve made in the past.
❌ Socialization Don’ts ❌
1️⃣ Isolating puppies until they finish vaccines
This denies puppies exposure during critical development periods (8-16 weeks). Without exposure, recovering from changes becomes that much harder.
Check out the video lesson below by Michael Ellis — if you’re still on the fence.
2️⃣ Not allowing puppies to interact with strangers
Some trainers claim protection dogs shouldn't socialize with strangers, this is dangerous advice.
A confident dog that's comfortable around people makes the best protection dog, since they won’t be insecure in normal interactions or in the presence of perceived threats.
✅ Socialization Do’s ✅
3️⃣ Prioritize positive experiences
Set up safe and controlled environments where you can expose them to:
Different people, dogs, and animals
Slippery surfaces, dark areas, tight spaces, and wide stairs
Loud sounds from buses and construction machinery
Let your puppy approach new experiences at their pace. Make sure to pair these experiences with high-value rewards.
Let me share how this looks in real life.
Jeanine from our community shared an efficient way to expose them to many of the stimuli mentioned above.
Fill up a kiddie pool with plastic bottles
Feed them their kibble in the pool
You can incorporate a jug with rocks as well
The result?

4️⃣ Be patient during fear periods
Puppies may develop temporary insecurities during developmental stages.
If your dog suddenly fears something familiar, don't force it. The more you poke a bruise, the more sensitive it gets.
Aki was quite unsocial and nervy as a puppy. Now that’s he’s almost a year old, he’s become more social and confident, especially over the last few weeks.
It was a good reminder that bloodlines mature at different rates.
5️⃣ Avoid Bad Experiences
Forced interactions or unavoidable exposures can sensitize dogs and worsen insecurities.
Instead, build trust with your dog by making sure they understand you’ll keep them out of harm’s way.
TL;DR: Socialization creates positive experiences that build confidence and adaptability. A well-socialized Malinois isn't one that loves everyone—it's one that remains calm and confident in any environment.
