Need help deciding between a Belgian Malinois or a German Shepherd?

The internet says don't get a Malinois.

But I bet you didn't know that 5 German Shepherds are surrendered for every 1 Malinois in the US.

Believe it or not, German Shepherds (GSDs) aren’t always the safest pick.

They are the more popular pick and for good reason.

There are two distinct types of GSDs which makes them incredibly versatile.

Show line GSDs can make great family dogs with relatively little effort.

While working line GSDs require much more effort, sharing more in common with Belgian Malinois than their own show line counterparts.

So if you're looking for a nice family pet with pointy ears and a deep bark, look no further than a show line German Shepherd.

But if you're looking for something that is capable of a bite behind that bark, then keep reading.

Show line Belgian Malinois are way more dog than most people expect since it was bred to work first.

In short, there is no family pet version.

There are always outliers though...

I found Lexi at a local pound and she was incredibly low drive compared to Aki.

Looking back, she was probably a GSD/Mal cross.

Her conformation always puzzled me. I should've got a DNA test or asked our subreddit /s

TL;DR: Working line GSDs and Belgian Malinois have more in common with each other than show line GSDs.

But none of this matters if you buy from a backyard breeder or adopt a puppy from a rescue without knowing their parents' temperaments.

Both breeds are being ruined by irresponsible breeding that produces nervy, anxious dogs.
