Should You Feed Raw Or Kibble?
What I've learned after feeding both.
Our Toolbox π§°
Are you torn between feeding raw or kibble?
My first dog thrived on kibble. My second wouldn't touch it.
Here's what I wish someone told me before choosing.
Weekly Bite
My first dog Lexi was easy. No food allergies. No sensitivities.
Just an empty pit that would eat anything I put in front of her.
Kibble was a no-brainer.
My second dog, Aki? Completely differentβ¦
His skin issues had me chasing answers for months, and he refused to eat kibble no matter what I tried.
After switching to raw, he wolfed it down. That solved one problem.
But he was still itchy.
After our vet prescribed immunosuppressants, we were able to get both problems under control.
Lexi and Aki taught me that there's no correct answer.
So which should you feed?
It depends on your situation.
Here's a quick look at the pros and cons of each.
Raw
β Healthier coat, less shedding
β Picky eaters start eating
β Easier to maintain weight & condition
β Smaller π©
β More expensive (Akiβs food is ~$70 USD/week)
β Requires planning
β Cleanup and sanitation matter
Kibble
β Easy to feed anywhere, no prep
β Great for training rewards
β Cheaper at scale
β Much more practical for travel
β Can trigger skin issues
If you can afford it and only have a dog or two, raw is worth trying due to the benefit of feeding whole foods.
If you're feeding multiple dogs or on a budget, kibble is the more practical choice.
Personally, I'd much rather feed kibble for the convenience. Aki just didn't give me that option.
Tip: If your dog has skin or digestive issues, try a fish-based kibble before going down the elimination diet trial route.
TL;DR: There's no universal winner. If your dog thrives on kibble, stick with it. If they're struggling with skin issues, zero food drive, or flat out refusing to eat, raw might be the move. The best food is the one your dog does well on.
