How To Stop Leash Pulling
Swap it with loose leash walking.
Tired of being pulled like a sled? Here’s how expert trainers solve it with loose leash walking in 5 steps.
Heeling takes time to perfect — but this method is easy and quick to teach.

Aversive tools can be helpful training aids—but only when used correctly. Expert trainers stress three key points:
Start with high value interactive rewards, but beware of distractions that outcompete them.
Your dog needs to understand how to avoid aversive experiences to feel in control. Without clear guidelines, stress builds, and your bond can suffer.
Expose your dog gradually to manageable aversive experiences that they can yield to and recover from, building resilience.

Don’t be afraid to remove links, a poorly fit prong collar requires more force.
How To Stop Leash Pulling
Here’s how I taught Aki loose leash walking.
Equip the right gear: Fit a 2.25mm prong collar with a backup flat collar. Attach both via a safety clip (cloth is better than metal, learn from my mistake).
Grip the leash properly: Put your thumb through the loop and use an overhand grip (thumbs up) with your other hand. Keep enough slack to allow light corrections with a flick of your wrist.
Start walking: Take a few paces and stop walking.
Correct them: When they reach the end of your leash, quickly correct them with a pop. Lead them back with the prong collar and restart step 3.
Reward: Once they stop and back up before reaching the end of your leash, reward with a high-value treat.
Loose leash walking has made walking much more enjoyable. Next, Aki and I will be focusing on controlled walking and heeling, which we both know will take some time.
